WHAT IT TAKES TO SUSTAIN THE HOUSTON PLAYGROUND

by David Stern-Gottfried

For years neighbors and parents have raised around $2,000 annually and hundreds more from in-kind donations, along with hundreds of volunteer hours to maintain the playground for our children to enjoy. Stop by sometime (walk up the driveway beside the school) to see and feel the magic of this playground.

Each year we have a massive community work day in the spring to spread wood chips, add new sand, fix the equipment, and oil the wood (that’s a lot!).  We’ve started a new fundraising tradition in the fall.  This November 8th from 10am-2pm (Nov 9th rain date) is our 2nd Annual Community Fun Day and Yard Sale where we raise money by hosting a large community schoolyard sale.  Any one is welcome to sell their goods.  We even organize a donation drop off for left over items.  This year there will be an added bake sale component too!

Caring for the playground is run completely by volunteers.  WMAN generously provides our fiscal sponsorship.  The steering committee is made up of local neighbors (myself, Crystal Bianchi, Simon Dicker, Zack Seward, and Alex Malek).  We’ve also connected a with some amazing parents at Houston.  The Home and School Association has been instrumental in supporting the playground (special thanks to Liz Taylor, Toby Kessler, and Stepheneecee).  Along with a new relationship with Leroy Hall, the newly-appointed Principal at Houston, we are excited to work as a team to unify the community around caring for and enjoying this local treasure.

See you at the Fall Yard Sale (this year on November 8th)…the mulching party in the Spring (date TBD)…and hope you feel the pride in our neighborhood school that is well deserved and that will spur you to support it and us in our ancillary, but essential, work.
