March

Movie: Up in the Air
Friday, March 12, 8 p.m., Saturday, March 13, 8 p.m., Sunday, March 14, 7 p.m.

The Little Theater @ Mt. Airy’s Video Library, 7141 Germantown Avenue
Question: What do you get when you combine 4 nominations for the most coveted Oscars: one for Best Picture, one for Best Actor (George Clooney) and two-- for Best Screenplay and Best Director (Jason Reitman --Juno)? Answer Up in the Air.

Clooney plays a cold man who’s more comfortable on a plane or in an airport than he is at home base. He is sent to meet employees of his company, one by one, all over the country to inform them that they’re out and outsourcing is in. He’s content with his life—no complexity, no ties—until 2 women enter his life, shake him out of his complacency and show him other ways to live. It’s 2010, so though there are comic moments, at its heart, this film is a serious study of moral dilemmas and how the characters (and we) respond to them throughout the film. Tickets (including popcorn): $6. Website: www.mtairyvideolibrary.com.

In Kebab Connection Ibo, an aspiring filmmaker, creates a rhapsodic commercial for his uncle's snack shack in a bid to impress the big-time producers and direct Germany's first kung fu feature movie. Things are looking good until his girlfriend finds herself pregnant and his father disowns him. Where will the hapless Ibo find himself a break? Lucky for him, his guardian angel looks an awful lot like Bruce Lee. Admission: $5. Free parking at Henry School lot. Website: www.flickeringfilms.com

Movie: Broken Embraces
Friday, March 19, 8 p.m., Saturday, March 20, 8 p.m., Sunday, March 21, 7 p.m.

The Little Theater @ Mt. Airy’s Video Library, 7141 Germantown Avenue
Pedro Almodóvar and his muse Penelope Cruz once again treat us to a mysterious, complicated tale in which every character and all relationships are ever-changing. Lena (Cruz) is a fantasy in the eyes of every man she meets, but she finds no pleasure in her superficial beauty. Nor is she amused by her professional life as an actress. When she plays a role in a comedy—a movie within the movie—she is again assuming a part that others give her. Who really knows her? Who knows that she is concealing a past she’d rather forget?

Lena is only one of the many characters in the film who chooses a new identity. Central to the story is Harry, who assumes a new name and a new identity after an accident takes his wife and leaves him blind. Preferring anonymity, he abandons his life as a filmmaker. Everyone in Broken Embraces is involved directly or indirectly with films and film-making, No wonder: it’s Almodóvar’s favorite subject.

Broken Embraces has been nominated for Best Picture not in the English language. Tickets (including popcorn): $6. Website: www.mtairyvideolibrary.com.

Exhibit – Home: Reflections and Projections
Through Saturday, March 20

Mount Airy Contemporary Artists Space, 25 West Mt. Airy Avenue
Mount Airy Contemporary Artists Space is pleased to present Home: Reflections and Projections, an exhibition of the works of Christina Day and Brenna K. Murphy.

Guided by personal history and memory, Christina Day's sculptural works act as free-standing reflections of dimensional place. Her sculptures reconfigure and compress domestic architectural elements like doorways, corners, and stairwells.

Working primarily with her own hair, Brenna K. Murphy creates works on paper and site-specific installations of domestic objects and spaces. As the product of a nomadic upbringing, moving eight times and living in six states by the age of eighteen, she is interested in the relationship between the ideal of home and the body.

Precious comes from a most heinous household. Repeatedly raped by her father and abused by her mother, she has no choice but to give birth to one child and carry a second. Her life is hell even in school, where she is taunted as the obese, unworthy kid. When she transfers to another school, she encounters people for the first time who care about her. She has always escaped from her abuse by creating fantasies of a different life. But there are glimmers of hope; her resilience just might help her turn her magical world into a new reality, a life of dignity. For her stellar performance as Precious, Gabourey Sidibe has been nominated for Best Actress Oscar.

The film has also been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. Tickets (including popcorn): $6. Website: www.mtairyvideolibrary.com.
